Hawera OpShopping
Hawera might be best known as a stopover on the way to somewhere else, but if you’re a fan of secondhand treasure hunting, it’s worth slowing down for. The town has a solid little cluster of op shops for its size, and as part of South Taranaki, it’s got that unhurried small-town energy that makes browsing genuinely enjoyable.
I stopped in on a road trip between Whanganui and Stratford, so I didn’t have unlimited time. I’ve popped the shops on a map so you can plan your route before you arrive.
Hawera Op Shops
Here’s the list of op shops I visited:
- SPCA Op Shop
- St Vincent de Paul
- St Mary’s Op Shop
- Salvation Army Store
There are a couple more shops in town, the Hawera Hospice and Taranaki Animal Protection that I didn’t manage to visit. So they’re worth adding to your list if you’ve got more time available.
Best For…
- Furniture – The Salvation Army is your go-to here. It’s the biggest store in town and the one most likely to have larger pieces worth stopping for.
- Home Decor & Retro Finds – The SPCA Op Shop is a solid browse if homewares are your thing, with some retro pieces mixed in among the shelves.
- Clothing – St Mary’s is the one to head to if you’re after a good clothing browse.
- Quick Stop – Most of the shops are within easy walking distance of each other, so you can tick them all off without moving the car more than once.
Where to Fuel Up
All that browsing works up an appetite. When I visited I stopped in at The Parson Bird, a classic old-school cafe on the high street — good food, great value, and exactly the kind of spot that feels right after a morning of op shopping. Worth checking current hours before you go as things do change, but Hawera has a good handful of cafes to choose from if you’re looking for alternatives.
Tips for Hawera Opshopping
- The Salvation Army is worth extra time – it’s the biggest of the bunch and has a furniture section, so give yourself more than a quick five-minute browse.
- The shops are close together – you can easily walk between most of them, which makes it a very relaxed way to spend a morning without constantly moving the car.
- Hawera makes a great road trip stop – whether you’re heading to or from Stratford, New Plymouth, or Whanganui, it’s easy to build in an hour or two without adding much to your journey.
- Go early for the best picks – like most op shops, earlier in the day means fresher stock on the shelves.
- Bring cash – some smaller stores prefer it, and a few may charge a surcharge on card payments.

Hawera Opshopping and More
Hawera is a great little addition to any Taranaki road trip itinerary. It’s not a huge op shopping destination, but with a handful of shops to browse it’s well worth a stop if you’re passing through South Taranaki.
If you’re heading to the coast, New Plymouth has a much bigger op shopping selection and plenty more to explore. Coming from the east, Whanganui is another favourite of mine for secondhand treasure hunting.
Did I miss an op shop in Hawera, or do you have a favourite? I’d love to hear about it in the comments.
