Palmerston North Op Shops
On a recent trip to the Manawatu region, I was pleasantly surprised by how many Palmerston North op shops got the tick from me. I’m always drawn to bright, well presented shops were you can actually see what’s on the racks and bonus points if pricing is reasonable. There’s something special about wandering through a well-organised op shop, you never quite know what treasures you might stumble upon, weather it’s a retro lamp, a quirky piece of glassware, or even a vintage coat that sparks joy.
With quite a few op shops scattered around the city, I decided to plot all the ones I visited on a handy map. If you’re planning your own op shop trail, this makes it easy to pick a few stops and build your day around them. Trust me, a little planning goes a long way when you want to make the most of a day opshopping.
Op Shops
Here’s the list of op shops I visited:
- Restore Hospice
- Orphans Aid Op Shop
- Red Cross
- SPCA
- Hato Hone St John
- Arohanui
- St Vinnies
- Main Street Family Store
- Highbury House
- Palmerston North Street Van Charity (2 stores)
- Walters Rd homeware – secondhand
- Salvation Army Family Store
Some of these places are perfect for a quick browse, while others are the kind of shops where you could happily spend hours digging through the racks and shelves.
- Vintage Pram
- Vintage Mixer
- Orphan Aid
Best For…
- Vintage & Retro Orphans Aid Op Shop and Walters Rd Homeware (secondhand) are my top picks. The retro vibe in both shops is brilliant and you really feel like you’re hunting for hidden gems. I found myself lingering over some retro clothing and quirky glass pieces that I’m still dreaming about. Though Orphans Aid has a small dedicated area its worthwhile visiting.
- Furniture SPCA – this might have been a smaller shop but it had some excellent pieces including book shelves and cane baskets. Arohanui is a larger shop but it did have a lot of furniture and some retro bits and pieces that I managed to bring home.
- Quick Stops SPCA, Hato Hone-St John, Main Street family store are all in close proximity if you want a quick shop. These are perfect for popping in on your way between other stops or a quick stop on your way home.

Where to Fuel Up
All that op shopping can be surprisingly tiring, so its worth planning a coffee break. I added a couple of cafes to my map:
- Cafe Express – located on The Square, a classic spot for a flat white and something to eat.
- Thyme & Fig cafe/lunch Bar – just a short stroll from Arohanui, perfect if you want a light lunch or something sweet to refuel.
Pro Tips for Palmerston North Op Shopping
- Go early for the best picks – Many op shops restock overnight or early in the morning, so if you’re after vintage clothing or quirky homewares, hitting the stores before lunch can make a big difference.
- Bring cash – Some smaller shops don’t take cards or have a surcharge, so having a few notes on hand keeps things stress-free.
- Plan your route – With so many stores in Palmy, it helps to map out a trail so you can hit the shops efficiently without doubling back. Bonus: you’ll get to see some of the city’s street art along the way.
- Don’t judge a shop by its size – The smaller ones often hide the best treasures. I’ve found everything from retro glassware to tiny furniture gems in shops you could walk past in a heartbeat.
- Bring a tote bag – Easier to carry your finds, and it’s eco-friendly! Plus, it frees up your hands for holding a flat white from Cafe Express.
Palmerston North Op Shops & More
If Palmerston North is one of your Manawatū road trip stops, these op shops are a great way to break up the day while you’re ticking off other things to do around the city. From my perspective, Palmy has plenty more to explore – public sculptures, street art and quirky corners waiting to be discovered.
And if your road trip continues to Whanganui you can find art galleries, the Tarapuruhi Bushy Park Forest Sanctuary, and the coastal art trail plus even more op shops.
There are more op shops and secondhand stores in Palmy than I managed to visit, either because they were closed or I simply ran out of time. Do you have a favourite? I would love to hear about it. And if you’re are keen to shop handmade you should visit George St Collective right next to Walters Rd Homeware – their selection of local crafts and unique finds is well worth a browse.
