Pukekohe Opshopping

Pukekohe might be best known as the onion growing capital of New Zealand, but if you are looking for some secondhand treasure hunting, Pukekohe opshopping is well worth adding to your list. There are now six op shops in Pukekohe and most of them are close enough together to make a half-day crawl very easy to manage. I visit often and this is my updated guide, because a couple of things have changed since I wrote the original Pukekohe op shops post back in 2024. There is a new shop in the mix and at least one has moved location, so it was time for a refresh.

There is something satisfying about a compact op shop crawl where you can tick everything off without too much driving around. Pukekohe is pretty good for that, and for those of us in the Franklin or South Auckland area it is a handy option that does not require heading into the city.

I have popped all the shops I visited on a map so you can plan your route before you go.

Op Shops

Here is the list of op shops I visited:

  • Hato Hone St John
  • Salvation Army
  • Franklin Community Hospice Shop
  • SPCA Op Shop
  • Bloom Op Shop
  • Restore – Habitat for Humanity

Most of the shops sit in or close to the main shopping area of Pukekohe, so you can walk between several of them fairly easily. The two exceptions are Hato Hone St John and Restore, both of which require a short drive, so it is worth factoring that into your route planning before you head out.

Best For…

  • Vintage crockery and glassware – Bloom Op Shop is the standout for this. Lots of vintage cups and saucers, crockery, glassware and some pottery. If that is what you are hunting for, this is your shop.
  • Furniture – Salvation Army and Restore are your best bets for furniture. Restore leans more vintage-y in its overall feel.
  • A well-presented browse – Hato Hone St John is bright, nicely laid out and always feels like it has been curated with a bit of care. A good all-rounder.
  • Clothing – Salvation Army has the biggest range by far. Bloom is also worth a look, with a solid selection including men’s and kids’ clothing.
  • Quick stops – Franklin Community Hospice and SPCA are both small and easy to pop into without losing much time. The Hospice shop is practically next door to the Salvation Army, which makes it a natural double stop.

Where to Fuel Up

All that op shopping works up an appetite, so it’s worth having a plan for a break. I often stop for a bite in Pukekohe, recommendations are Robert Harris cafe which is practically next store to the Salvation Army store or if want something a little more substantial there is The Monarch

Pro Tips for Pukekohe Opshopping

  • Go earlier in the day – Like most op shops, restocking tends to happen in the mornings, so earlier generally means fresher stock on the shelves.
  • Plan your route – Most shops are walkable from each other in the main shopping area, but Hato Hone St John and Restore both require a short drive, so it is worth mapping out your order before you start.
  • Bring cash – Some smaller stores prefer it, and a few may charge a surcharge on card payments.
  • Check Restore’s location – If you visited before, note that Restore has shifted since 2024 so update your route accordingly.
  • Don’t rush the small ones – SPCA is compact and a bit crammed in, but the stock is nice. Give it a fair go even if it looks tiny from the doorway.

Pukekohe Opshopping and More

Pukekohe is a solid half-day op shopping stop for anyone in the South Auckland or Franklin area. Six shops in a fairly compact area means you can cover them all without rushing, and with a mix of large stores and smaller boutique-style shops there is something for most tastes.

If you are in the area it is also well worth popping over to Waiuku for more secondhand hunting. And if you want to make more of the drive, the Āwhitu Peninsula a beautiful spot not far away.

Did I miss an op shop in Pukekohe, or do you have a favourite? I would love to hear about it in the comments.
