Things to do in Palmy
Less than an hour’s drive from Whanganui, Palmerston North is often overlooked for visiting. But after spending a couple of days exploring, I discovered there are plenty of things to do in Palmy (aka Palmerston North) — especially if you love art, culture, and getting outdoors.
From riverside walks and parks to public art and galleries here are some of the best things to do in Palmy if you’re planning a short visit or weekend getaway.
Street Art
While wandering the inner city I came across a number of pieces of Street Art. I found some by accident including the Under the Cloak of Peace by Millo an Italian artist. I had followed Millo on social media not thinking I would get to see some of his art in person. To find out the location of various murals use the Palmy Art Map .

Walks and More
Victoria Esplanade
Not to be missed is the Victoria Esplanade, its a park that is over 26 hectares in size. It is ideal for some quiet reflection, a walk amongst the roses ( Dugald Mackenzie rose breeding centre) and camellia collections, bush walks, and so much more. It also has mini golf, a scenic railway, kids road safety park, a paddling pool, playground, cafe and picnic spots. You can access the shared pathway from the Esplanade.
Wildbase Recovery Centre
Located in Victoria Esplanade is the Wildbase Recovery Centre. Wildlife such as birds come here to recover after receiving treatment at Massey University Wildbase Hospital, it is free to visit.
There are a number of specially designed aviaries for recovery. There is an aviary that you can walk through which houses tuatara and a variety of native birds, a number of which are permanent residents. When I visited I was fortunate to see a pāngurunguru/northern giant petrel which had been blown inland from a storm and had been found exhausted. There was also a ruru/owl but it was hiding, though it was daytime so it could have been sleeping.
Manawatu River Shared Pathway
For a picturesque walk along the river head to the shared pathway. Its approx 10 km end to end. There are a number of reserves, a dog park and other things to see on the pathway.

Kahuterawa Outdoor Rec Hub
If you are looking for some walks or MTB trails head out to the Kahuterawa Outdoor Rec Hub. To get to the hub it is approximately a 20 minute drive from Palmerston North. At the carpark there is a bike wash, toilets and picnic area.

Eateries
On Fitzherbert Ave opposite Victoria Esplanade is Elm Cafe. I had breakfast there one morning which was rather enjoyable. Cafe Express is located on The Square, a nice stop for a coffee and something to eat. The Thyme & Fig cafe/lunch Bar was not far from some of the op shops I visited and would recommend if you are needing a break.

Final Thoughts on Things to Do in Palmy
Palmerston North turned out to be a great little mix of creative spaces, walks, and relaxed city vibes, making it an easy place to fill a couple of days without rushing around. If op shopping is more your style, I’ll also be putting together a dedicated Palmerston North op shop guide, with all the best places to hunt for second-hand treasures — I’ll link it here once it’s live.
