Brisbane Must Dos

My first trip to Brisbane Australia and as per usual I pack too much in so here is the first blog and there will be a second. We stayed in the inner city and didn’t have a car so all places I visited were within walking distance. I would certainly make time to visit the Museum and Art Galleries and add them to your Must Do list. And because there was so much to see there is a part two.

Museums and Art Galleries

Museum of Brisbane

Brisbane has a large number of museums and galleries and I managed to visit a couple. One visit included  the Museum of Brisbane (MoB). MOB is a social history museum and art gallery. It is located on Level 3 City Hall. If you like to see a different perspective of the area take a paid tour of the clock tower. This will give you a 360 degree view of the city and a ride in one of Brisbane’s oldest working cage lifts and Australia’s largest analogue clock faces. Afterwards i visited the museum and viewed a number of the exhibitions and stopped for something to eat at Shingle Inn City Hall which is a reincarnation of Brisbane’s oldest cafe.

One thing I would have loved to do was look at the Main Auditorium it has a copper dome. There are tours but I didn’t find out as I was leaving and then we left for home.

Queensland Cultural Centre

Next stop was the Gallery of Modern Art and the Queensland Art Gallery (QAG) which are located on Brisbane’s South Bank and is part of the Queensland Cultural Centre. I really enjoyed the exhibits in QAG maybe due to the water features adding a calming effect.

Some of the amazing art I saw is shown below.

South Bank Parklands

The South Bank Parklands is located on the south bank of the Brisbane river and an ideal place for all sorts of activities along the many paths such as running, cycling and walking. Stop at the Brisbane sign and take a photo or catch a ferry and explore more of Brisbane. Every Saturday morning there is a 5km Park Run/walk

The Parklands also consists of a mixture of rainforest, water, grassed areas and plazas as well as features such as the riverfront promenade, the Streets Beach, the Grand Arbour, the Courier Mail Piazza, the Nepalese Peace Pagoda, the Wheel of Brisbane, restaurants, shops and fountains. The parklands are also home to the Queensland Conservatorium. Wikipedia

Catch a Ferry

A fun thing to do is to catch one of the free ferries and explore more of Brisbane via the Brisbane River. The free ferry runs across the river and has 7 stops. If you want to explore further up or down the river you can pay to do so.

Markets

If you search via google for markets in Brisbane you will see that there are quite a few. Fortunately I was able to attend some of them. Especially since not all are held on the weekend.

The Collective Markets Southbank best place to see whats happening is their Facebook Page

The West End Markets Davies Park open every Saturday you can find out more here

Brisbane City Markets hold markets 3 times a week in various spots check out times and more information here

Op Shops/Thrift Stores

I did manage to locate some op shops within walking distance of our accommodation. I only visited the shops that had a mixture of clothing and second hand goods. On hind sight I should have taken an uber in order to visit more stores, maybe next time.

I popped into the Lifeline Shop, Serendipity Op Shop, Yesterdays Thrift Shop, Retro World Collective (this was a very cool shop) and the Neo Generalist Vintage store. I have put all the stores on Google Maps so if you want to visit then they’ll be easy to find.
