Transform Textiles: Master Sewing a Drawstring Bag with Upcycled Fabrics.

Have you ever been let down by a plastic bag? I have. Some years ago while traveling overseas I was using plastic bags to store dirty shoes and the inevitable happened the bag broke. That was it. Dirty shoes all through my suitcase. Never again since I started sewing my drawstring bags. Over the years I’ve thought of more and more uses for them, which I’ll share below.

And, of course when the bags break it’s more rubbish to be added to the landfill, so I decided to instead make and use drawstring bags. Since that decision, you can’t even get plastic bags from stores or supermarkets anymore, in New Zealand at least, so it really was great timing!

Paper Bags?

And don’t get me started on the paper bags supermarkets now give us. They only need a couple of things in them and they rip and your cans of spaghetti go rolling down the driveway! About all they’re good for is carting the recycling to the recycling bin. The drawstring bags fix that, they are so much stronger and last for ages so have a go and master sewing a drawstring bag and transform some textiles at the same time. Can you tell I’m really passionate about the humble drawstring bag.

Transform Textiles and Upcycle

You all know how much I love to upcycle, and there are many different fabrics that can be used to make drawstring bags including new teatowels, and new fabrics, and of course, you can upcycle fabrics like vintage bedsheets and other fabrics to create something unique but that could also be used time and time again. To prevent wet items leaking onto surrounding dry things I lined some of the bags with a water resistant fabric called PUL.

Have you ever thought about how many things you could use a drawstring bag for? I’ve been making a list to share with you. No doubt I will think of more, but here are my top uses:

1. Ballet shoes/gear
2. Cubs ditty bag
3. Dirty shoes bag
4. Dirty laundry bag for when away
5. Kids overnight bag
6. Togs bag
7. Library bag
8. Gift bag
9. Hygiene Products bag
10. Going to be a long time at appointments bag fill with snacks water etc
11. Travel bag for kids filled with activities etc for long trips
12. Fruit and vege bag

Ways I use my bags

Some of the way I use my bags are shown below and I often use them for travelling. Dirty shoes and small items like underwear in bags make for happy travelling – no messes.
