Upcycle Fabrics
What do you do? You discover a favourite blouse has a stain and no amount of washing will remove the stain. Then there’s nana’s napkins that she gave to you, sentimental pieces. The dilemma on what to do with them, maybe they need to go in the bin? Reframing that thought how can we reuse them? Perhaps you’d like to give someone a gift as a token of appreciation or you’re looking for a birthday gift but it has to be unique and budget friendly? There are many ways to upcycle fabrics on the internet, here are a couple I’ve personally done before.
Jar Covers – Idea No. 1
An oldie but a goody If you have some jars lying around make some quick jar covers to either go with the décor you already have or so you can give the jars away as gifts. I used a vintage sheet for the smaller jar and a napkin for the larger jar
Equipment
- fabric/doilies/napkins (see this listing if you need supplies)
- jars – I used a small preserving jar and one filled with honey
- pinking shears (scissors with zig zag edge)
- ribbon or string for tying around the fabric
- rubber band
Instructions
- Take the doily or napkin and place over jar with rubber band to keep in place. Then tie with ribbon
- If cutting out fabric, make a template first. Take a piece of paper, turn jar upside down then draw a circle around the lid. Then take a tape measure and measure from edge of jar lid to approximately how far down you would like the edge of the fabric to come on the jar. Keeping in mind that the fabric will be gathered in slightly. Draw another circle from original circle using your measurements and then cut out with pinking shears. Pinking shears stop the fabric from fraying. Alternate is turn up a small hem and hand stitch or stitch with sewing machine.
- Place the fabric over jar with rubber band then tie with ribbon or string
- Fill the jars with things that you use every day such as makeup remover pads, etc or give away as a gift
