Things to do in Busselton WA – Memorable

Last year we headed to the USA so my partner could participate in the Iron Man 70.3  event (read about it here). This year in May we travelled to Busselton, in Western Australia for an event in the same series. Planing beforehand some things to do in Busselton WA. We flew Air New Zealand direct from Auckland to Perth. Looking forward to the warmth of Australia we landed in temperatures of 30°C. We then made the 2.5 hour trip to Busselton via Budget hire car. 

Things to do in Busselton WA

The Busselton Jetty – The jetty is a major attraction in Bussselton and has been around for 153 years. At 1841m, it’s the second longest jetty in the world and the longest in the Southern Hemisphere. You can walk to the end of the Jetty reading about the history on the way and visiting the underwater observatory at the end. Or if you prefer you can catch the train. Yes there is a train that runs along the Jetty and because we walked last visit we decided to have a trip on the train. History of Busselton  If you want to discover more I suggest you purchase the Busselton Heritage Trail book from Railway House (Visitor Centre) and have a wander around town. Learn more about the people who settled in the area in 1832 and the history of some of the buildings which still stand today.

Walking and Cycle Trails I love to explore places by foot so I was happy to discover a number of walking trails which included wetland areas. For people who love to ride a bike there are a number of shared paths in the Busselton area. Bike hire can be found at the Jetty or Fat Duck Cycles who also have a cafe as well. If you visit Fat Duck you must try the Jaffles (a new word I learnt which means toasted sandwich). The Georgraphe Path right on the foreshore of Geographe Bay was a favourite. If feeling energetic you can cycle all the way to Dunsborough.

 

Art I visited the Courthouse ArtGeo Cultural Complex. The Courthouse  houses The Lockup Coffee House and the local art gallery and studio run by the The Busselton Art Society (you can find out more here ). The Margaret River Region had an open studios event while we were in Busselton so I took the opportunity to see some of the local artists work.

Cafes If you love a good cup of coffee, in Busselton there are many to choose from these are just some we visited.

• Little Peach Espresso
• Dome Cafe
• The Goose
• The Fire Station – we had dinner here one evening

For the Kids At the Busselton Forshore there is a wonderful playground and skate park. Also open green spaces and  plenty of beach area to build sandcastles or play in the water.

 

 

Of course there is much more to see and do in the area. You can read about my previous visit to the region in this blog. Weather wasn’t as warm as I hoped fortunately I was able to buy a few warmer clothes but I will be better prepared next time. Partner finished his triathlon I got lots of exploring in and so many photos (this is just a very small portion).
