If you are anything like me you can’t go past a bargain. And there is nothing like the thrill of finding a new treasure for a great price. Op shopping, also known as opportunity shopping, charity or thrift shopping is a world wide phenomenon. There are also television programs featuring finding objects and re-purposing them.

If you have followed me for awhile you will know that I love op shopping and even wrote about it here. Some of the things I find I upcycle into map trays and other mixed media artwork Rotorua is an op shop mecca with a number of shops selling a variety of goods. Most of the op shops raise funds for various charities like SPCA, the Salvation Army etc I spent a day exploring all of Rotorua has to offer in the way of op shopping.

Red Cross Shop t/a Urban Ore @The Recycling Centre, 24 Te Ngae Road

The Red Cross Shop sells clothes, bric a brac, some furniture and while it can be a little untidy at times the staff are lovely. Its quite exciting when you come across treasures like this old typewriter. Unfortunately I left it for someone else to find.

Hospice Shop 1130 Eruera St

Nice spacious op shop which also sells a variety of goods. It does have some nice antique furniture pieces and artwork at times. Clothing and kids toys are also sold here. Last time I visited I purchased a nice mid century coffee table.

Salvation Army 1233 Pukuatua St

Some interesting pieces of furniture when I visited this op shop. Lots of clothes, bricabrac and things for kids. Great spacious shop.

St Lukes 1223 Amohia St and NZ Red Cross cnr of Rangiuru and Lake Road are quite small shops and sell mainly clothing. Though I have found the odd piece of pyrex at St Lukes

To make it easier for you to find the shops I have made a map with the places on them. You can see them all here If there is somewhere I’ve missed make sure you comment as I’ll have to go check it out.
